To buy organic or Not to Buy organic

Something I've always pondered is whether or not a healthy lifestyle really warrants buying organic food, which is often more expensive than conventionally grown food. Here's a summary of some recent findings:

  • Organic food was once said to be more nutritional than conventionally grown food, but a large British study recently put that to rest. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5j4ZubDZOmskcUR9Ss4AfIJ1eWtyQ
  • Organic food, however, is about more than just nutrition to me and many others. It's about the things it doesn't have (pesticides, etc.) that make it healthier than conventional.
  • There's no reason to go crazy on all organics as some conventionally grown food has very little pesiticide residue anyway. There is a list called the "Dirty Dozen" all of which are good first candidates if you are looking to go organic. http://www.organic.org/articles/showarticle/article-214
  • One way to trim the cost of organic food is to go with a store's private label brand. Many big grocery stores have their own organic brands now and can often save you as much as 20%

So, the choice regarding buying organic food is really a personal one. Of course, one has to factor in that an organic food may not always be the best for the enviornment if it has been shipped across country, for example. So, like many things in life, this choice can have its trade-offs, too.
