This is a lurking question for many 0f us as we work on building up our intake of healthy fruits and vegetables. To help, here's a list of what goes where in your kitchen. Following this guideline for storing produce will help your produce last longer and taste better:
Refrigerator produce drawer - keep items in the produce bags you get at the store
- Artichokes
- Asparagus
- Beans & peas
- Beets
- Berries
- Broccoli & Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Carrots & Celery
- Cherries
- Corn
- Cucumbers
- Grapes
- Green onions
- Lettuce/spinach, etc.
- Leeks
- Radishes
- Zucchini & Summer squash
On your counter - out of direct sun, and in a well-ventilated spot
- Apples & Pears (move to refriegerator when ripe)
- Stone fruits, (exc. Cherries); apricots, nectarines, peaches, plums, mangoes, papaya - move to refrigerator when ripe
- Avocados (move to refrigerator when ripe as this will stop ripening)
- Bananas
- Oranges, Lemons & Limes
- Eggplant
- Kiwi
- Melons
- Peppers
- Pineapple
- Pommegranates
- Tomatoes
- Winter Squash
In your pantry or cupboard - away from light, in a well-ventilated spot
- Garlic
- Onions
- Potatoes
